Type Locality and Naming

SW Guangxi. In 1974 the Guangxi Petroleum Geological Team established the Bali Formation of which the type section is around Nanan-Bali of the Ningming County, Guangxi.


Lithology and Thickness

The formation mainly comprises purple red sandstone, siltstone and silty mudstone. It is 546 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Its basal part is differentiated from purple red sandy conglomerate of the Napai Fm by the appearance of gray yellow and gray purple sandstone and thin-bedded siltstone. It is in conformable contact with the underlying Napai Fm.

Upper contact

Its top is cut by faults. It contacts unconformably with the overlying Paleogene strata

Regional extent

The formation is mainly distributed around Nanan-Bali of Shiwandashan of Guangxi. It is a group of purple red sandstone, siltstone and mudstone of Early Cretaceous age.

Fossils

The formation yields Bivalves Trigonioides diversicostata, Nippononaia yunnanensis, Nakamuranania chingshanensis, N.subrotunda, Plicatounio annansis, Pseudohyris hojjeti, P.subovolis; and Angiosperms Cinnamomum hesperium, C. newberryi.
